چکیده

5 [1] Modern earthquake catalogs are often described using spatial‐temporal point process 6 models such as the epidemic‐type aftershock sequence (ETAS) models of Ogata (1998). 7 Earthquake catalogs often have issues of incompleteness and other inaccuracies for 8 earthquakes of magnitude below a certain threshold, and such earthquakes are typically 9 removed prior to fitting a point process model. This paper investigates the bias in the 10 parameters in ETAS models introduced by the removal of the smallest events. It is shown 11 that in the case of most of the ETAS parameters, the bias increases approximately 12 exponentially as a function of the lower magnitude cutoff.

Standard errors of parameter estimates in the ETAS model_07

Point process models such as the Epidemic-type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS) model have been widely used in the analysis and description of seismic catalogs and in shortterm earthquake forecasting. The standard errors of parameter estimates in the ETAS model are significant and cannot be ignored. This paper uses simulations to explore the accuracy of conventional standard error estimates based on ...

Assessing the dependency between the magnitudes of earthquakes and the magnitudes of their aftershocks

Current assumptions on the level of inter-dependency between the magnitudes of earthquakes and the magnitudes of their aftershocks vary significantly, ranging from assumed independence for models like epidemic type aftershock-sequence (ETAS) to assumed positive correlation, at least for the events leading up to the largest earthquakes, for models like accelerated moment release. Recently, a met...

Sub-critical and Super-critical Regimes in Epidemic Models of Earthquake Aftershocks

We present an analytical solution and numerical tests of the epidemic-type aftershock (ETAS) model for aftershocks, which describes foreshocks, aftershocks and mainshocks on the same footing. In this model, each earthquake of magnitude m triggers aftershocks with a rate proportional to 10. The occurrence rate of aftershocks triggered by a single mainshock decreases with the time from the mainsh...

The Partitioning of Radiated Energy and the Largest Aftershock of Seismic Sequences Occurred in the Northeastern Italy and Western Slovenia

We analyzed the most relevant seismic sequences occurred from 1977 to 2007 in the FriuliVenezia Giulia region (northeastern Italy) and western Slovenia. The 8 aftershock sequences were triggered by low to moderate magnitude earthquakes with mainshock duration magnitude ranging from 3.7 to 5.6. The b-value of the Gutenberg-Richter law varies from 0.8 to 1.1. The modified Omori’s modeling of the ...

Distribution of the largest aftershocks in branching models of triggered seismicity: theory of the universal Båth law.

Using the epidemic-type aftershock sequence (ETAS) branching model of triggered seismicity, we apply the formalism of generating probability functions to calculate exactly the average difference between the magnitude of a mainshock and the magnitude of its largest aftershock over all generations. This average magnitude difference is found empirically to be independent of the mainshock magnitude...
